Daft Punk was a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 in Paris by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. They became widely known in the late 1990s as part of the French house movement, incorporating elements of house, funk, disco, techno, rock, and synth-pop. The duo has been cited as influential in electronic dance music. Bangalter and de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk after their previous group, the indie rock band Darlin', disbanded. From 1996 to 2008 they were managed by Pedro Winter, founder of Ed Banger Records. Their debut album, "Homework", was released by Virgin Records in 1997 and included the singles "Around the World" and "Da Funk". In 1999, the duo adopted robot personas for public appearances, wearing helmets, gloves, and costumes that concealed their identities. Their second album, "Discovery", released in 2001, achieved further commercial success and included the singles "One More Time", "Digital Love", and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". The album served as the basis for the animated film "Interstella 5555", supervised by Japanese artist Leiji Matsumoto. Daft Punk released their third album, "Human After All", in 2005. The singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" achieved chart success in several countries. In 2006 the duo directed the science fiction film "Electroma". They toured in 2006 and 2007, releasing the live album "Alive 2007", which received the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. In 2010, Daft Punk composed the score for the film "Tron: Legacy". In 2013 they left Virgin Records and signed with Columbia Records, releasing their fourth and final studio album, "Random Access Memories". The lead single, "Get Lucky", reached the top ten in numerous countries. At the 2014 Grammy Awards, "Random Access Memories" won five awards, including Album of the Year, while "Get Lucky" received the award for Record of the Year. In 2016, Daft Punk achieved their only number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Starboy", a collaboration with the Weeknd. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked them twelfth on its list of the greatest musical duos. The magazine later included "Discovery" and "Random Access Memories" in its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Daft Punk announced their split in 2021.
