Jordin Brianna Sparks (born December 22, 1989) is an American singer and actress. She became known in 2007 after winning the sixth season of “American Idol” at the age of 17, making her the youngest winner in the show’s history. Following her win, she released her debut studio album “Jordin Sparks” in 2007, which reached number ten on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, with worldwide sales exceeding two million copies. The album produced the singles “Tattoo”, which reached the Billboard Hot 100 top ten, and “No Air” (with Chris Brown), which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, and sold several million copies in the United States. In 2009 she released her second studio album “Battlefield”, which debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and included the title track “Battlefield”, which reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. Other singles from the album included “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)” and “Don’t Let It Go to Your Head”. In 2014 she released the mixtape “#ByeFelicia”, and in 2015 she released her third studio album “Right Here Right Now”. She later released the albums “Cider & Hennessy” in 2020 and “No Restrictions” in 2024. Throughout her music career she has received awards including an NAACP Image Award, a BET Award, an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award and two Teen Choice Awards, and was ranked by Billboard as the 91st Artist of the 2000s Decade and by VH1 as number 92 on its list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music. After winning “American Idol”, Sparks signed with 19 Recordings and Jive Records and released “Tattoo” as her debut single in 2007. She performed at the Super Bowl XLII national anthem in 2008 and toured as an opening act for Alicia Keys, as well as joining tours with the Jonas Brothers and Britney Spears in 2009. She returned multiple times as a guest performer on “American Idol” in later seasons. In 2008 she experienced a vocal cord hemorrhage that required a period of vocal rest but later resumed touring and promotion. In 2009 she performed at President Barack Obama’s inaugural events. Alongside music, Sparks expanded into acting. She made her Broadway debut in “In the Heights” in 2010 and her film debut in “Sparkle” (2012), in which she played the lead role and performed the song “Celebrate” with Whitney Houston. She also appeared in “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete” (2013) and “Left Behind” (2014), and guest-starred in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”. She has also worked in television and reality programming, including “The Masked Dancer” in 2021 and “Dancing with the Stars” season 31. In 2018 she appeared in reality and documentary-style projects including “Jordin Sparks: A Baby Story” and “Heart of Batter with Jordin Sparks”, and in 2019 she performed on Broadway in “Waitress”. Sparks has also worked in other media and commercial projects, including the release of fragrances such as Because of You, Fascinate, and Ambition. In 2013 she released the holiday single “This Is My Wish” in collaboration with Glade and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, and in 2020 she was featured on the charity single “Pink” alongside Dolly Parton, Monica, Sara Evans, and Rita Wilson. In 2023 she released the single “Call My Name” ahead of her fifth studio album “No Restrictions”, and in 2023 and 2024 she released the holiday EPs “The Gift of Christmas” and “Joy” in collaboration with Epidemic Sound, featuring Christmas-themed songs and covers. Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Jodi Wiedmann Sparks and former professional American football player Phillippi Sparks, and grew up partly in New Jersey while her father played for the New York Giants. She attended several schools in Arizona and was homeschooled during her later high school years to focus on her music career. She has a younger brother, Phillippi “PJ” Sparks Jr. Her background includes African American and European ancestry, including German, English, Scottish, and Norwegian heritage. She is an evangelical Christian and has spoken publicly about her faith in connection with her career.
